Air Marshal Sir Hugh Dowding was the commander of Figther Command during the Battle of Britain in the summer of 1940 when his cadre of young Royal Air Force (RAF) Hurricane and Spitfire pilots from Britain, the Commonwealth countries and emigrés defeated the Luftwaffe.  Dowding's career spanned over three decades and his innovations, eccentricities and enemies are reviewed in this month's lead article.
